Add-Ins (make Word work better)
(all FREE Free!)

bullet Letterhead system.  This is a system for self-updating letter forms. Letterhead System - click to download The idea is to have letterhead components stored in one location and have letter forms reference that location when used so that form letters will have the latest letterhead information. If you are generating your letterhead on the computer or if your letter forms need to accommodate pre-printed letterhead, you should look at this! - Last updated 10-Jul-2001 - Version 2001.05 - zip file 496 KB - See also the Letterhead Textboxes and Styles Tutorial (below)  Download Letterhead System Now
bulletGender Toolbar - Lets you use a custom document property to make gender-specific fields in Word 97 - 2003. Contains built in toolbar, instructions for installation (and un-installation), autotext entries & macros. - Last Updated 3-Feb-2001. Zip file 60 K - Version 2001.02

Unobtrusive - powerful!

Gender Toolbar - click to download

Examples:

Ms. X is  female, a woman. She is married, making her a wife. Her bicycle was a present from her parents. That is why people say the bicycle is hers.

Mr. X is male, a man. He is married, making him a husband. His bicycle was a present from his parents. That is why people say the bicycle is his.

The gender-specific words can be set/changed at the click of a button.
The fields can be inserted from the toolbar. Once fields have been inserted from the toolbar, the document with fields can be used by someone else who does not have the add-in by manually changing the document property. Otherwise, they retain their gender just as if they were ordinary text.

bullet DateLoader Add-In - In Word Alt-Shift-D inserts a Date field (4/15/2004) that updates every time you open or print a document. Most uses work better with a CreateDate field that gives you the current date when you insert it and remains that same date. When used in a template, it is updated when a new document is created. Also, people may prefer a long date rather than the short date. This Add-In substitutes a long format (April 15, 2004) CreateDate field. It also has instructions for changing the format and has several options. For details on datefields take a look at  Using Date Fields in Microsoft Word. (template in 8K zip folder, no macros or code, Version 1.0)

bullet FileNewDialog Add-In - In Word 2003, the File => New command brings up a task pane which the people at Microsoft thought helpful, instead of the Dialog box that lists the available templates. You can get to that dialog from the task pane, but it is an extra step. This Add-In returns the old File => New command (as File => New (dialog)) and changes the built-in command to File => New (task pane). No macros or code. (template in 6K zip folder, Version 2004.01)

bullet FormatStylesDialog Add-In - In Word 2003, the Format => Styles and Formatting... command brings up a task pane which the people at Microsoft thought helpful, instead of the Dialog box that lists the available templates. A different link - with an explanatory article is also free: Favorite Places Bar Wizard at OfficeVBA However, there is a catch! This is on the OfficeVBA site which is member-only.  Don't despair! You can sign up for a free issue of the magazine and get 30 days of free access to the site. This site is so good I ended up paying for a subscription to the magazine just for these download privileges.
You don't really need to read the articles, just download the utilities. The articles, though are good if you are trying to learn VBA because they explain in great detail what is being done and why.

Also on the OfficeVBA site (see above) is an Add-In that improves the drop-down thesaurus and spelling menus by giving you access to more replacement choices, retaining capitalization in replacements, and allowing addition of words to multiple custom dictionaries. Although you will want to read both articles (Thesaurus and Speller) you only need to download the Add-In from the Speller article.
