How can I make a back coverpage in Word?
Q: I know how to make and file a cover page for a
word document. However sometimes I need there to be a back cover. That I
haven`t figured out how to yet.
You can`t file that under cover page as it only replaces
your cover page. So the question is? How do I make one? Once I make one, how
can I have it available for future documents without repeating the process?
A: You may be working with one of the Ribbon versions
of Word (Word 2007 and later) since those make cover pages easy.
The first suggestion would be to simply enter a page break
and make your back cover. In a simple document, this will work fine.
However, once you start with a document that has page numbers and/or
headers/footers, it can be painful to even try this!
Ribbon Versions (Word 2007 and later) that have "Building
Blocks"
In Word 2007 and later Cover Pages are a special kind of
"Building Block." You use Insert > Cover Page to insert one (front) cover
page in a document. If there is already a Cover Page, your selection will
replace it. So that doesn't work for your back page.
To create a back cover page:
| At the end of your document, insert a new-page or
even-page section break (under Breaks on the Page Layout Tab) and set
the headers/footers in that section to not link to previous.
|
| Then delete any headers/footers (assuming you do not
want them on your back page. Note that any Section will have three
headers and three footers even if you don't see them. See
Header/Footer Settings Recap if you don't understand how this
happens. |
| Put in your content. If you are saving this as a
pattern, you may find the
StyleRef
Field useful to grab information from the body of your
document. |
If you want to save this as a building block, you would
want to select from the section break forward and save it as a building
block. (Alt+F3) There is not a gallery for back covers, but there are plenty
of custom galleries available. Pick one and use it.
Word 2003 and earlier
You could instead use the section break and blank
headers/footers.
| At the end of your document, Insert > Break and then
choose either next-page or even-page. |
| Undo Link to Previous setting in any header or footer
and then erase content (assuming you do not want this on your back cover
page. |
| Put in your content. Again you may find the
StyleRef
Field useful to grab information from the body of your
document. |
If you want to save this as an AutoText entry for later
use, you would select from the section break to the end of your document and
save as an AutoText entry. (Alt+F3)
